Trade truce extended. The deliverables still aren't.

Transcript

Tom Alright, trade truce extended again — but buddy, the deliverables still aren't named. That's the tension kicking off London.

Marie I'm Marie, and this is Investment Flash — London Edition, Thursday, September twenty-fourth. Tom and Gerald are here, and we're breaking down the trade truce, India's record I P O, and an earnings downgrade flip I think deserves way more airtime.

Tom And the headline is exactly that truce extension. Bessent and Xi, January tenth — no November tariff bomb. CNBC and Nikkei both have it. China large caps, China internet, Alibaba — they all get a reprieve.

Marie Wait — not so fast. Bessent explicitly conditions the extension on Beijing still delivering on outstanding commitments, and nobody is naming those commitments. That's the risk the rally is skipping.

Gerald Yeah look, the market is buying the postponement of conflict, not a resolution. Two more months is the political equivalent of kicking a margin call.

Tom But the relief is real, Gerald. Alibaba is the most liquid China ADR and Apple's China supply chain gets direct margin relief. That's not nothing.

Marie It's not nothing, but it is delay-risk, not de-risk. If Beijing stalls on the first measurable commitment, the trade names that rallied have the most to give back.

Gerald And the funny part is, the same sources that confirm the extension don't actually list a single deliverable. Analysts covering this are writing checks the Chinese government hasn't signed.

Tom ha — fair enough.

Gerald So we agree— buy the relief, but sell into January.

Marie Exactly.

Tom Totally.

Tom Now India — the National Stock Exchange raised two point four billion dollars in the country's biggest I P O of the year, and shares rose on their debut. BSE also wins.

Gerald The exchange listing itself is a landmark, Tom, but it's more about market depth than today's move. Durable signal? Sure. Trade? I'd rather own the India equity ETF than chase a fresh listing.

Marie This is structural — a two point four billion dollar domestic I P O signals foreign appetite, and it strengthens BSE's listing franchise. India's equity culture is deepening.

Tom See, Gerald, the momentum is real. Fresh listing, two sources confirming, and the NSE's own debut gives the entire exchange sector a glow.

Gerald And when an exchange lists itself, the bankers get to underwrite the underwriter. That's a beautiful circularity.

Tom oh come on.

Gerald India's state refiners are ramping LPG output for festival season. IOC and BPCL are lifting runs, with Gulf conflict disrupting contracted cargoes. No volume numbers, but it's a small real supply story.

Tom Cooking gas as the inflation hedge nobody wanted. But festival season demand is real, and IOC is the largest refiner. I'd rather own the volume.

Marie The import bill is the constraint, though. Gulf disruption keeps a floor under product prices, but if cargoes stay disrupted, the macro cost rises. Hold crude oil, but watch the non-Russian supply point.

Gerald Right, so we're buying LPG and skipping crude? That's not a trade, that's dinner prep.

Tom ha — fair enough.

Gerald Okay, this one is for me. Malkiel says high yields plus expensive stocks make this a good time to rebalance into bonds. And the FT radar says the Fed will act to keep inflation moderating. Long duration, intermediates, investment grade credit.

Tom But Gerald, the long end keeps selling off. You're catching a falling knife in duration.

Marie Direction, not timing. The Fed forecast has no path or threshold. So treat it as a tilt, not a trade trigger.

Gerald Fair enough, but if yields have peaked, the belly captures the rebalancing call with less duration risk. I'm not advocating a one-way bet.

Tom Only Gerald can turn a bond allocation into a 'I'm not a perma-bear' speech.

Gerald I'm consistent, Tom. Buy value, sell hype.

Marie Now the one that should worry everyone — analysts snapped their longest run of US earnings upgrades in five years, flipping net negative for the first time in months. That removes estimate support under index multiples.

Gerald This is the data point, not just a headline. Inflation and higher rates squeezing profits. Equal weight S&P, high yield — the broad downgrade hits the average stock harder.

Tom Hold on, Gerald. Mega-cap leaders might still hold up, but if analyst revisions are net negative, even Microsoft an' them have a ceiling. Sell S&P, sell equal weight, sell high yield?

Marie No but that's exactly my point — this is the first data point to go net negative, and the market hasn't repriced it yet.

Gerald So the bear case is clear. The only thing supporting multiples was estimate support, and now it's gone.

Tom But here's the flip side — if the trade truce holds and macro tail risk recedes, earnings quality might stabilize. The immediate trade is still sell the index, but I'm not chasing doom.

Marie And as always, none of this is investment advice — it's our read of the morning signals.

Tom AI agents are eroding consumer inertia that protects banks, brokers, and travel booking companies. Bloomberg names Expedia, Booking, Schwab as exposed. Microsoft collects the disruption rents!

Marie This is a structural attack on moats, Tom. If account stickiness and booking inertia are gone, Booking's premium multiple is the exact thing being attacked.

Gerald Expedia, Schwab — these are names people thought had safe franchises. But AI agents don't care about your loyalty points. Sell them.

Tom And buy Microsoft. The vendors selling agentic AI collect the rents across affected sectors.

Gerald Microsoft collecting 'disruption rents' sounds like tax farming for software giants.

Tom I mean… he's not wrong.

Tom Japan is set to catch up with the global AI rally when trading resumes. Tokyo Electron, hedged exporters, and the weak yen are the story.

Marie The weak yen is both the earnings tailwind and the policy headache. Intervention risk is in focus. If the BOJ steps in, the hedged trade gets messy.

Gerald Remember yesterday's sell Vertiv call, Tom? Japan semis might be the cleaner AI capex long. Tokyo Electron is the most direct Japanese AI-capex exposure.

Tom Cheapest relative value trade of the day. If Japan gaps higher and holds, the AI rotation is broadening.

Marie But if it opens and fades, the catch-up is already in the price. Watch the first Asian session.

Tom Exactly.

Gerald That's the whole story.

Gerald Euro hit a two-month low after the Fed hike, and options traders added downside hedges. That's the confirming signal.

Marie Wider rate differentials make the path of least resistance lower. Sell euro-dollar, buy US dollar.

Tom I'd rather just own the dollar broadly — the Fed hike is a tailwind beyond the euro.

Gerald Selling the euro feels like pushing on an open door, but if nobody's offering resistance, that's the trade.

Gerald FT investigation — Rosneft's hard-currency flows sat at the heart of a Kremlin-backed laundering network to dodge sanctions. That raises odds of tighter enforcement.

Marie This is structural. Stricter enforcement removes Russian barrels and supports non-Russian energy. Brent crude and gold benefit.

Tom And Gerald, your Whitehaven Coal buy from yesterday looks even better with this. Energy names get a policy tailwind.

Gerald I did not have 'sanctions busting via money laundering' on my bingo card, but here we are.

Marie pff, okay.

Marie Hong Kong's exchange will consult on extending trading hours to align with global markets. No decision or timeline yet, but longer hours typically mean more turnover for the bourse's fee engine.

Tom Liquidity-heavy Chinese names stand to gain, and HKEX earns fees on volume. Buy HKEX.

Gerald Early market-structure signal, Tom. No timeline, no decision. I'd treat it as optionality, not a trade.

Tom Guangzhou Futures Exchange plans to list lithium hydroxide contracts as soon as this year. A hedging curve would improve price discovery and financing for the battery chain.

Gerald New hedging venue is nice, but it also creates more transparent benchmark pricing. That cuts both ways for Albemarle and SQM.

Marie Exactly — hold Albemarle, buy the battery chain ETF. The contract helps finance new supply but makes pricing more transparent, which squeezes margins for incumbents.

Marie Turkish stock fund scam ensnared four hundred fifty-five thousand investors, and one victim tried to sell two weeks after putting in his savings. That chokes retail participation in Turkish equities.

Gerald And burned savers are likely to shift into hard currency and gold. Sell Turkey equities, and buy the dollar against the lira.

Tom I'll skip Turkey as a trade, but the macro risk is real. Distrust in lira assets pushes them into dollars and gold.

Marie And that's the structural point — fraud doesn't just hurt victims, it drives a whole economy out of its own currency.

Tom Cineplex launched a strategic review that could end in a sale, hired Goldman Sachs and TD Securities. Takeover premium is live under the shares.

Gerald Dual advisers is a strong signal, but no bidder or price. I'd wait for the process to leak a name.

Marie The strategic review itself is the trade. Buy Cineplex for the optionality.

Gerald FT Alphaville says Kalshi, the prediction market venue, might list event contracts on the outcome of its own regulatory battles. Self-referential markets.

Marie The circularity is the problem — a contract on Kalshi's survival is only useful as long as Kalshi exists to settle it.

Tom So I can bet on whether they survive to pay out my bet? That's the most existential option trade ever.

Gerald It's elegant, but if the venue dies, the contract dies. It's a derivative on its own counterparty risk.

Marie And that's exactly why regulators will hate it.

Marie Three threads from today's coverage: the trade truce got another two months, analysts flipped net negative on US earnings, and the euro broke to a two-month low after the Fed hike. Delay-risk, not de-risk.

Gerald The market is buying the postponement of conflict and selling the slow deterioration in earnings quality. Two months is not durable — Bessent explicitly says deliverables, and no one is naming them.

Tom Counterargument — the reaction is already in the tape. Euro at two-month low means the rate differential has been traded. The truce extension was expected. If the missing deliverables turn out trivial, Chinese large caps squeeze higher into year-end.

Marie But Tom, the analyst flip is the first data point, not a headline, to go net negative. I'd rather own the relief with a sell discipline into January than extend the US index bounce.

Gerald Watch the January deadline. The trade names that rallied have the most to give back if Beijing stalls.

Tom And watch Japan's first session — if the catch-up holds, the AI rotation is broadening. If it fades, it's already priced.

Marie The cleanest expression is the gap between trade-truce relief and earnings downgrade reality. They are in tension.

Tom Agreed.

Gerald That's the whole story.

Marie Exactly.
